Transformation workshop “The Scope 3 Challenge” at ARNOLD: Focus on climate targets in supply networks

How can climate targets be achieved along complex supply chains? This question was addressed on October 14, 2025, at the transformation workshop “Challenge Scope 3: Advancing climate targets in complex supply networks” at the ARNOLD site in Dörzbach.

Organized by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Energy as part of the climate protection strategy “Companies Make Climate Protection,” the workshop offered experts a platform for exchange. As host, ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK GmbH & Co. KG facilitated a practical dialogue on how companies can reduce their Scope 3 emissions through cooperation in supply networks.

The aim of the event was to discuss solutions and best practices for climate-friendly supply chains. Three keynote speeches kicked off the workshop and provided valuable food for thought for the subsequent discussions:

  • Prof. Dr. Rainer Lindner (SMS Group GmbH) emphasized that cooperation in the supply chain is key to achieving climate targets. Only through close cooperation can all parties involved along the value chain contribute effectively to reducing emissions.
  • Olga Demchenko, an expert on sustainability in the steel industry, highlighted that green steel can be a decisive lever for climate-friendly supply chains. Climate-neutral steel production significantly reduces Scope 3 emissions in the manufacturing industry and drives innovation.
  • Michael Pult (Head of Marketing and Sustainability, ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK) presented a concrete practical example with “ACO₂ Save – Every screw can be a climate protector.” He demonstrated how innovative fasteners and weight reduction in screws help to save CO₂ and proved that even the smallest components can contribute to climate protection.

This was followed by open discussion rounds. In a panel discussion, representatives from various companies discussed the current challenges in reducing Scope 3 emissions. Participants then explored key issues in more depth at themed tables in an interactive World Café and worked together to develop possible solutions.

The most important results of the workshop included:

  • A survey of participants showed that a lack of data availability, transparency, and data quality are the biggest challenges in reducing Scope 3 emissions.
  • The panel discussion made it clear that high bureaucratic burdens, a lack of standardization, and international competitive disadvantages are key obstacles to effective climate protection along global supply chains.
  • Solutions were developed at the themed tables, including the increased use of digital tools for emissions tracking, closer involvement of suppliers, and calls for clearer framework conditions and uniform standards.

All participants came to the same conclusion: “We are not alone in facing these challenges.” As host and initiator, ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK emphasized its commitment to promoting sustainable solutions together with partners and demonstrated with ACO₂ Save how innovation in connection technology can reduce emissions. In his closing remarks, ARNOLD thanked the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment for the initiative and all participants for the open, practical exchange.

About the event

The transformation workshop “Challenge Scope 3: Advancing climate targets in complex supply networks” took place on October 14, 2025, at the Dörzbach plant of ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK GmbH & Co. KG. It was organized by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Energy as part of the climate protection strategy “Companies Make Climate Protection.” With this initiative, the state of Baden-Württemberg supports companies in voluntarily implementing climate protection measures and learning from each other. Transformation workshops such as this one serve as a practical forum for exchanging experiences, challenges, and successful approaches to advancing climate neutrality in business and supply chains.
